The history of Hazelwood begins with early French explorers coming into the valley in the 1600’s. Then in 1796, two brothers, David and Abraham Musick, came from Virginia with their families and settled in the present location of Hazelwood. Incorporated in 1949 in response to an attempt by Florissant to annex the area, Hazelwood is a Home Rule Charter City and is governed by a Council/Manager form of government, with an elected mayor and eight council members representing eight wards.

The Hazelwood Public School District, as well as several private and parochial schools are available to Hazelwood families. The large outlet mall, St. Louis Mills Mall, is convenient for resident shoppers, as well as visitors to the city. Lambert St. Louis International Airport is just minutes away.
